  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Walter and Harry Hazlewood founded Hazlewood Brothers Nursery in 1908 in a corner of their parents’ orchard on Carlingford Road, Epping. The nursery expanded to occupy the whole orchard and eventually land beyond. The nursery was owned by the Hazlewood family until it was sold in 1976.

    In the 1920s, Walter and Harry’s younger brother Rex Hazlewood joined the business. Rex Hazlewood is well-known for his photographs of Sydney and suburbs from the first quarter of the 20th century.

  • Collection history
    Stella Rumsey's grandfather, Roy Rumsey worked at Hazlewood Nursery between 1925 and 1929 and is in the photograph.

    Photographic print on board mount, inscribed below image at lower right ‘R. Hazlewood’. Note accompanied with photograph is annotated with names of staff.

    The photograph depicts the owners and staff of Hazlewood Brothers Nursery, a successful family-owned and managed business in Epping which existed for a large part of the 20th century.
