    Joseph Rennard Orton (1795-1842) was born at Hull, England. In 1826 he entered the Wesleyan ministry and in 1831 he was sent to Australia to revive the cause of Wesleyan Methodism. He is remembered as a champion of the Aboriginal people and in 1836 published Aborigines of Australia.

    Samuel Pinder Henry (1800-1852) was a Tahitian-born trader and son of the London Missionary Society missionary William Henry. He was the first known European to land on the Isle of Pines. In 1831 he was employed by the NSW government to assist in the relocation of the Pitcairn Islanders to Tahiti.

    A handwritten letter from Samuel P. Henry, Sydney, New South Wales, to Joseph Orton, 15 August 1832, followed on the same sheet of paper, by a letter from Joseph Orton, Sydney, New South Wales, to the Secretaries of the Wesleyan Society, London, 7 September 1832.
    Henry's letter is headed 'Duplicate', and proposes a plan to improve communications between all London Missionary Society and Wesleyan Missionary Society stations in the South Seas. Orton's letter expresses his own dissatisfaction with the situation and refers Henry's plan to the Society as a possible solution, 7 September 1832.
    The letter is written in ink and retains its original red, wax seal.
