Tony Abbott was the Federal Member for Warringah, New South Wales from 1994 to 2019. In March 2018, the 'Vote Tony Out' campaign began when a local Manly resident, Mark Kelly, started a closed Facebook group called ‘Let's not reelect Tony Abbott’. The campaign used social media platforms, demonstrations and produced various pieces of merchandise, including the red Budgy Smuggler trunks. Tony Abbott, volunteer life-saver and surfer, was known for wearing red 'budgie smugglers' when ocean swimming.
Budgy Smuggler is an Australian clothing brand name and manufacturer of brief mens swimming trunks. Their trade mark and design is based on the Australian slang term 'Budgie Smugglers', used to describe tight-fitting men's Speedo-style swimwear. The 'lump in the front' apparently resembles a budgerigar when it is stuffed down the front of someone's shorts. The budgerigar is a long-tailed, seed-eating parrot native to Australia, and the only species in the genus Melopsittacus.
