    William Essington King (1821-1910), third son of Rear Admiral Phillip Parker King and grandson of Governor Philip Gidley King, was Police Magistrate and Gold Commissioner for Braidwood, New South Wales retiring in 1859. He married Christina Sarah, eldest daughter of William Edward Riley in 1854 and they had eight sons and three daughters. Jonathan King (1942-) is the great great grandson of Rear Admiral Phillip Parker King.

    This album originally presented to Christina Sarah Riley, was used by William Essington King and family, and later owned by Hannibal Essington King, Reginald John Essington King and Jonathan Essington King.     Inscribed in pencil on first page 'Rose U King, when I am gone, W.E.K'. Includes firsthand family stories; obituaries of notable colonial figures; original silhouettes of seven King family members including Phillip Parker King and his wife Harriet, Philip Gidley King, Rev. Robert Lethbridge King, Arthur Septimus King, Charles Macarthur King, Frederick King, ca. 1848; map and notes by William Essington King of his overland droving expedition in 1850; newspaper clippings; calling cards of Phillip Parker King, Allan Cunningham T A Brown (Rolf Boldrewood) and others; loose pages of manuscript death notice written by William Essington King for his wife, 26 October 1886; William Essington King manuscript notes on the lives of Philip Gidley King, Phillip Parker King and Harriet King, including copy of Philip Gidley King's advice to his son Phillip Parker King, 21 July 1805, an account of Phillip Parker King’s exploration of the Australian coast, his courtship of Harriet and general family history. Also includes manuscript accounts by William Essington King of his work as overseer of 20 convicts on Phillip Parker King’s property, Dunheved in 1837-1838, and then his subsequent career in the 1840s-1890s, Phillip Parker King’s death and his relationship with him while growing up.

    This notebook was chiefly compiled by William Essington King for the purpose of recording the activities of family members, relatives and friends, and is organised alphabetically. It includes manuscript notes by William Essington King and Harriet King, with other additions by Hannibal King including photographs, newspaper clippings, alphabetical index, family trees and accounts of the King, Macarthur and Marsden families. Also included is a copy of Phillip Parker King’s diary of his visit to Port Phillip Bay in 1838, descriptions of John Batman, Thomas Mitchell and the escaped convict William Buckley; William Essington King’s account of the founding of the Australian Agricultural Company.
