  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Charles Harrisson was appointed biologist on Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition 1911-1914 (AAE). Harrisson sketched a number of views of the expedition and the Antarctic landscape. This work documenting members of the AAE on a sledging journey, was amongst a small number completed after returning to Hobart from Antarctica.

  • Collection history
    Presented by Charles Harrisson to Douglas Mawson and Paquita (nee Francisca Adriana Delprat) as a wedding gift in March 1914. The work remained in the Mawson family until it was offered for sale by Mawson's granddaughter Paquita Boston in 2019. Reference: Library correspondence file
  • Scope and Content
    This painting depicts four men, possibly members of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition 1911-1914 (AAE), and their dogs 'huskies' on the ice in Antarctica setting up camp, with supplies on sledges surrounding them, and two partially constructed tents behind them.
