- ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
This type of stick puppet or dancing marionette, traditionally made of wood, originated in Europe in the sixteenth century, and were manipulated by either strings or a stick. In the United States in the first half of the twentieth century, numerous commercial versions of the black minstrel were marketed as toys or ornaments. This Australian example of Dancin Sam, produced by Sydney toymakers John Sands, appears to have been pirated from an American version in wood manufactured by Nockonwood Industries of Bloomfield, Iowa, ca. 1947. - Scope and ContentCardboard stick puppet in the form of an African-American minstrel holding a banjo. Includes articulated 'Dancin Sam' figure, dancing board, stick, and original box with colour illustrated lid and instructions.
