  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John Matthew Clark was born in New South Wales. In approximately 1900 he enlisted under the New South Wales Imperial Bushmen, a mounted regiment formed for combat during the South African Boer War, 1899-1902. He embarked in Sydney on board the transport 'Armenian' on 23 April 1900, arriving in Beira, Africa a month later. The regiment returned to Australia on board the transport 'Orient' on 17 July 1901. Clark died in 1943.

  • Scope and Content
    Private John Matthew Clark’s writings, including five handwritten poems and an incomplete memoir, mainly concerning the Boer War. The poems include 'Battle of Hartebeestfontein Poort'; 'The Music of a Shell’; ‘Lilly Fontein' [sic], dated 5 February 1901; 'A Kahaki [sic] Boy'; 'Forget Me Not'; and 'A Sailor Song'. The memoir, titled 'Ridges and Valleys', commences in April 1900 and provides a brief account of his war experiences. Also included is correspondence relating to Clark’s estate, 1943.
