    Henri de Freycinet was appointed Governor of French Guiana in 1826 and served there from February 1827 to 1829. He was made Baron in 1827 and Rear Admiral in 1828.
  • Scope and Content
    A series of nine documents. All but one have Laage archive stamps.

    1. General directions No.6 from the Ministère de la Marine et des Colonies to Joseph de Missiessy on his appointment as interim Governor of French Guiana, sent from Paris, 10 January 1826 (22 pages secured with blue ribbon, with Laage archive stamp, Carton 9, Dossier 231 B).
    2. Draft letter by Henri de Freycinet to ‘Mon général’ [Duperré?], sent from Cayenne, 28 March 1827, in clerk's hand (6 pages on two folded sheets, with Laage archive stamp, Dossier 213 D), expressing his disappointment in being ‘exiled’ to French Guiana after his years of service on Île Bourbon.
    3. Receipt from the Imprimerie Royale of French Guiana for paper, envelopes and binding of classical texts (Caesar, Diodorus Siculus and Pausanias are named), Cayenne, 22 November 1827 (1 page).
    4. ‘Rapport du Gouverneur de la Guyane française sur la situation de la Colonie et les diverses branches de l’administration pour l’année 1827’, being a manuscript report (in a clerk’s hand) by the Governor of French Guiana on the colony’s population, culture, commerce and city of Cayenne, 1827 (14 pages secured with twine, with Laage archive stamp, Dossier 201 H3A).
    5. ‘Suite du Rapport du Gouverneur de la Guyane française sur la situation de la Colonie et les diverses branches de l’administration pour l’année 1827’, being a continuation of the manuscript report in a different hand on the colony’s general administration, 1827 (4 pages, with Laage archive stamp, Dossier 201 H3B).
    6. ‘Administration générale’, being manuscript notes, apparently for the writing of the Governor’s Report (4 pages, with Laage archive stamp).
    7. Fair copy of report by Henri de Freycinet to Conseil privé, 16 September 1828, about race relations (booklet of 12 unnumbered pages, the last 4 blank, secured with green ribbon, with Laage archive stamp, Carton 9, Dossier 233).
    8. Draft letter from Henri de Freycinet to St Hilaire, sent from Cayenne, 20 March 1829, in clerk's hand, with corrections by Henri de Freycinet (2 pages, with Laage archive stamp, Dossier 213 I), thanking him for his letter on the occasion of the double favour that Freycinet received from the King.
    9. ‘Discours prononcé par le Gouverneur pour le Roi, en séance publique du Conseil privé, le 14 mai 1829, à l’occasion de la remise des médailles d’or, encouragement accordé aux grands perfectionnements agricoles’, 1829 (6 pages secured with green ribbon, with Laage archive stamp, Carton 7, Dossier 218 A), regarding M.M. Ronmy and Bernard. The text is in a clerical hand but the title is written crosswise in Freycinet’s left hand, as are his corrections throughout.
