    Dora Elizabeth Robertson Armitage Cooke (1858-1946) was born in St Clair, Michigan, on July 14, 1858. Dora moved with her family to Colombo, Sri Lanka as a child and married Charles Armitage in 1877, and gave birth to four children including Hugh Traill Armitage who later became Governor of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. Dora arrived in Sydney from London in 1887, and the following year established the Ladies’ Typewriting Association. She was committed to women’s rights including suffrage and better working conditions. In 1902 Dora married Captain Walter Cooke and gave birth to her sixth child, Janie. Dora died in London in 1946.
