  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Horatio Hale was born in Newport, New Hampshire in 1817. He studied languages and literature at Harvard College, and was appointed philologist of the United States Exploring Expedition to the Pacific (1838-1842), led by Charles Wilkes.

Hale's notebook compiled during his visit to Australia includes transcriptions from the manuscripts of L.E. Threlkeld (Lake Macquarie), whose language consultant was Awabakal man Biraban; William Watson (Wellington Valley) and others; as well as notes made from observations and interviews with other Aboriginal people who were generous enough to share their language and culture with him.

The notebook formed the basis of the chapter titled 'The Languages of Australia' in his book 'Ethnography and Philology (Philadelphia, 1846). The notebook also includes a later entry, possibly added during the 1880s and related to his article 'Language as a Test of Mental Capacity' (1887). Hale died in Clinton, Ontario in 1896
