Rupert Iggulden Furber was born in Albury, New South Wales to Thomas Frederick Furber in 1883. He studied medicine at Sydney University and became a gynaecologist and obstetrician before enlisting in the Australian Army Medical Corps as a medical officer and giving his wife, Mabel Rose Furber (nee Vicars), as his next of kin, 1915. He was Captain in the 1st Australian General Hospital, then promoted to Major and transferred to the 4th Field Ambulance, 1917. In the same year, Furber was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at the Battle of Messines, 1917.
