  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John James Yeomans (1761-1839) was convicted of burglary in 1791 and sentenced to transportation for seven years. He arrived in NSW on the Britannia in October 1791. He went on to achieve some success as a farmer firstly at Concord and then at Sackville, in the Hawkesbury region, before moving upriver to Wilberforce, where he continued to prosper. He also became an inn-keeper and a temporary special constable. John and his wife Mary Cassidy (1770-1835) had eight children including John Yeomans II (1808-1875) and Joseph Yeomans (1815-1852).

    John Yeomans II (1808-1875) married Sarah Lisson (1813-1873), daughter of Thomas Lisson and Ann Bradwell in 1835 and they had seven children: Richard (1836-1920), Mary (1837-1920), John Abel (1841-1894), Maude (1842-1929), Allan (1846-1916), Janet (1847-) and Julia (1848-1927).

    Mr. Allan Yeomans (1846- 1916) was born near Windsor, New South Wales, attended Sydney Grammar School and University of Sydney where he graduated as M.A. He spent some years in the Burnett district in Queensland before settling at Gilgoin Station, near Brewarrina, New South Wales. Allan married Margaret Campbell McCrackan (1858-1916), daughter of John McCrackan in 1877 in Sydney and they had eight children: Richard (1878-1956), Maxwell Allan (1880-1970), Francis Fulton (1881-1953), Julian Clyde (1883-1966), Allan Robert Campbell (1885-1974), Geoffrey (1891-1916), John Eric Septimus (1894-1918) and Jean Margaret (-1967).

    Geoffrey Heron Yeomans (1891-1916) was the sixth son of Allan Yeomans of Gilgoin Station near Brewarrina. He attended Hawkesbury Agricultural College and was a grazier before listing in the 6th Light Horse Regiment in 1914. Promoted over time to lieutenant, he served at both Gallipoli and the Western Front in the 1st Battalion and was killed in action at Contalmaison, France, in July 1916.

  • Scope and Content
    This collection documents three generations of the Yeomans family who were descended from the convict John Yeomans (1761-1839). It includes diaries, notebooks, correspondence, financial records, photographs, inscribed and annotated books and realia of the Yeomans and related families. Much of the material was collected by Allan Yeomans (1846-1916), a grazier at Gilgoin Station near Brewarrina, and his children, and include papers of Allan Yeomans, his father John Yeomans II (1808-1875) and his son, Lieutenant Geoffrey Yeomans (1891-1916), who died in France in World War I.
