    William Arthur Eastwood was born at South Melbourne, Victoria in 1919. During World War II he served as Leading Aircraftman, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), Service number 49177.

  • Scope and Content
    3 sketchbooks containing drawings and watercolours depicting daily life in the barracks at RAAF Tocumwal Station, the military base established at Tocumwal, New South Wales during World War II; and drawings completed at Madang and Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea.

    1. "Rathbone" Series 31 Sketch Book' (18 × 26 cm, front cover detached) contains 33 pages of artwork, including some pages loosely inserted. The sketches detail life in the barracks at RAAF Tocumwal Station. Servicemen are depicted smoking, writing home, reading, sewing, and sleeping. Also included are smaller, often head-and-shoulder, studies, as well as studies of women, and there are a number of full-page grotesque faces.

    2. The Student's Sketch Book' (23 × 30 cm ) contains 7 pages of artwork, including pencil drawings and a watercolour completed at Madang and Port Moresby.

    3. Untitled sketch book (24 × 31 cm), contains 28 pages of artworks, including watercolours and pencil sketches of grotesque faces, cartoon characters, family portraits, and architectural sketches for residential housing.
