William McGarvie (1810-1841) was a journalist, bookseller and pastoralist born in Glasgow, Scotland. McGarvie took charge of the Australian Stationery Warehouse in 1828 and later began publication of the Sydney Herald in 1831, with two partners.

George Hutchison was working at cotton merchant and cloth manufacturers, Cochran & Co. in Glasgow at the time of the letter.

Handwritten letter in ink, 15 December 1838. Letter written by William McGarvie to George Hutchinson, advising Hutchinson, based on his ten years living in the colony and two years as a bush settler, to not emigrate to New South Wales from Glasgow, Scotland. McGarvie details the economic situation of the colony at that time and offers an alternate opinion with the official line which encouraged emigration.
