  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Sir Philip Sydney Jones (1836-1918), physician and surgeon, was the second son of David Jones, merchant and founder of David Jones Ltd. In 1861 he opened a medical practice in College Street, Sydney. In 1876 he gave up general practice and became one of the first consulting physicians. He was an examiner in clinical medicine at the University of Sydney, a fellow of its senate from 1887-1918 and Vice-Chancellor from 1904-06.

    George Sydney Jones (1868-1927), architect, was the son of Sir Philip Sydney Jones. He was educated in architecture in London, and started his own architecture practice on his return to Australia in 1891. He was elected a Fellow of the NSW Institute 1896-1901, Editor of Art & Architecture, 1909-1912, and President of the NSW Institute of Architects, 1912-1914 and 1920-21

    Isabelle May Jones (d. 1956), the second daughter of John Rider Jones, married George Sydney Jones, 18 November 1895.

    John Rider Jones (d.1918), stockbroker, was Chairman of Sydney Stock Exchange 1890-1894.

    Bequeathed to Dr Jan Klaver, who is married to the donor, by Ms Kathleen Baxter (d. 2019). Kathleen's mother was Joyce Sydney Jones, first daughter of George Sydney Jones and Isabelle May Jones.
  • Scope and Content
    The collection mainly comprises photographs, both formal and informal, of Sir Philip Sydney Jones, George Sydney Jones and members of their families, as well as photographs of their homes, ‘Barncleuth’, Pennant Hills; ‘Llandilo’, Strathfield; and ‘Clifton’, Hunters Hill. Also included is a photograph of the family’s founder, David Jones; George Sydney Jones’ sketchbook; a pencil sketch of trees and a track by Norman Carter; and some correspondence and news clippings.
