Michael Dwyer (1772-1825) was an Irish revolutionary and political exile from Wicklow, Ireland. Dwyer joined the Society of United Irishmen in 1797. He soon became captain and led the Wicklow Rebellion. Dwyer married Mary Doyle in 1798 and together they had six children. Dwyer was gaoled in 1803 and deported to New South Wales with Mary and their two eldest children, as an unsentenced exile in 1806. Dwyer died of dysentery in 1825 and was buried at Liverpool, Sydney. He was reburied in the Devonshire Street Cemetery, Sydney in 1878. Upon the closure of the Devonshire Street Cemetery and the centenary celebrations of the 1798 Rebellion, Dwyer and Mary were reburied at Waverley Cemetery in 1989.
