  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Mary Campbell McGowan (1920-1989) was born in Corowa in 1920 to Reverend Hubert McGowan and his wife, Maude. Mary was educated at Maitland High School and the Methodist Ladies' College at Burwood. From an early age, Mary showed considerable ability, and made valuable contributions of song, sketch, and recitations to church and school concert programmes. She was employed at David Jones, in Sydney, and was a member of the Dajonian Dramatic Society. In 1939, Mary was chosen to play the role of 'Judy' in the film version of Ethel Turner's 'Seven Little Australians'.

    The motion picture adaptation of Ethel Turner's 'Seven Little Australians' was directed by Arthur Greville Collins and produced by O'Brien Studios.

    Collection comprised of one photograph album containing two photographs of Maud McGowan (nee Maytom), mother of Mary McGowan, sixteen production photographs and twenty newspaper clippings related to the 1939 film, 'Seven Little Australians', three photographs of Mary McGowan's home, including one of Mary and her father, Hubert McGowan, Darling Point, New South Wales, 1961, and one sheet of of twelve portraits of Mary taken circa mid-1980s by the Lichfield Studio, London.

    Also included is a folder containing thirteen clippings regarding the film and Mary McGowan's role as 'Judy', and photocopies of a handwritten dedication from Ethel Turner to Mary McGowan and a chapter from the book 'Seven Little Australians'.
