    Henry Mayo Bateman (1887-1970) was an Australian-born British humorous artist and cartoonist, noted for his "The Man Who..." series of cartoons, featuring comically exaggerated reactions to minor and usually upper-class social gaffes.

    George Washington Lambert (1873-1930) was an Australian artist, known principally for portrait painting and as an official war artist attached to the AIF during World War 1. His work is held in many Australian galleries and libraries including the Art Gallery of NSW, Australian War Memorial, State Library of NSW and National Library of Australia.

    Watercolour caricature drawing depicting Australian WWI official artist George Washington Lambert, who held an honorary commission as an officer and had no military experience, showing his ignorance of the correct response (a salute) when a soldier salutes him. Instead, he is offering to shake the soldier’s hand, the response of a civilian.
