The Nature Conservation Council of NSW was established in 1955 to provide a shared voice for community environmental organisations from across New South Wales. Representing more than 150 community organisations it is committed to protecting and restoring the unique natural environment of the state. The Nature Conservation Council of NSW is one of the most influential advocates for nature in NSW, and since 1955 it has campaigned successfully to protect forests and oceans, control land clearing, restore rivers and wetlands to health and promote clean renewable energy.

Nature Conservation Council (NCC) of NSW he was founded in 1955 at a meeting in Phillip St, Sydney. In 1957 the National Parks Act drafted by NCC and later that year the National Parks Association of NSW was founded. Ten years later, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Act was passed, and the National Parks and Wildlife Service founded.

The NCC continued to campaign successfully during the 1970s including the Battle for Kelly's Bush in Hunters Hill, the protection of Colong Caves and the ongoing campaigns to save rainforests in NSW. Before NCC, there was no Environment Protection Authority, no Land and Environment Court, and no marine parks.
