  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Anthony William Donald McIntyre was born in Sydney, the eldest of three children of Malcolm McIntyre and his wife, Sadie Bedford. Sadie was a dancer and actor with the J.C. Williamson's theatrical company and starred in Australia's first talking film, Talkie Mad (also known as Showgirl's Luck), made in the Blue Mountains in 1931. Malcolm was a solicitor and partner at Blake Dawson Waldron Edwards, one of Sydney's leading law firms, and became a judge with the Commonwealth Conciliation and Arbitration Court in 1952. He died in 1953 of leukaemia. Malcolm's father, William, had been a barrister and the MP for the then electoral district of Inverell from 1901 to 1902.
Tony McIntyre went to Cranbrook and then to the University of Sydney for an arts-law degree. After graduation he joined Blake Dawson Waldron Edwards, and became a partner at 24. He went into industrial law, not a popular field at the time, and earned a reputation as an exceptional lawyer, a fine writer and a meticulous record keeper. He indexed everything he read and the books are still used by the firm. He was also partner-in-charge of the firm's law library for more than 20 years and, after he left for the industrial commission, the library was named in his honour.
McIntyre was a generous and philanthropic man who loved theatre, opera and good wine. He was happily godfather to many of his friends' children and every year held a Christmas party for all his family and friends. He loved books and reading and travelled widely.
Tony McIntyre never married. He is survived by his sister, Joanna, and brother, Angus, and their families.
