After graduating from Sydney University, Babette Smith (1942 -) worked as a production assistant, then ultimately a producer in theatre and television. She has held a number of corporate positions including Chief Executive of the New South Wales Bar Association 1993-1997, Director of Language Services for the NSW Ethnic Affairs Commission and Chief Executive of the mediation organisation LEADR. In 2001 she established her Sydney practice as a mediator, conciliator and dispute resolution consultant. Her occasional journalism has included stints as a columnist for the Australian Financial Review and ITA magazine. She has published six books including A Cargo of Women: Susannah Watson & the Convicts of the Princess Royal (1988, 2005), A Cargo of Women: the Novel (1991), Mothers & Sons (1995), Coming up for Air: the History of the Asthma Foundation of NSW (2003), Australia’s Birthstain (2008) and The Luck of the Irish (2014)
