The establishment of the Royal Flying Doctor Service was mainly due to the efforts of John Flynn, a Presbyterian minister, whose vision was to provide medical services to sick and injured people in remote areas of Australia. On 15 May 1928 the first base of the Australian Inland Mission Aerial Medical Service opened in Cloncurry, Queensland. In 1942 the name was changed to the Flying Doctor Service and in 1955 it became the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The NSW Section was formed in 1936 with its base at Broken Hill becoming operational in 1937. In 1945 Sister Myra Blanch became the first nurse to be employed at the Broken Hill Base.
