  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Mary Anne Black (1828-1892) was born in Sydney, the eldest daughter of John Henry Black (1799–1867) and his wife Louisa née Skinner (1808-1874). She married William Norman Llewellin in 1850. They had 11 children.

John Henry Black was the son of Captain John Black (1778-1802) and former convict Mary Hyde (1779-1864). John Henry Black and his sister Mary Ann Black (1801-1861) were born in Sydney on John Black’s allotment on the eastern side of George Street, between Hunter Street and Martin Place, backing onto the Tank Stream.

Captain John Black died in 1802 when his ship was lost at sea. Mary Hyde then moved in with and later married the former convict turned businessman Simeon Lord (1771-1840). The land on George Street was held in trust by Simeon Lord for John Black’s two children.

John Henry Black married Louisa Skinner in 1828. They had eight children. John Henry Black was the chief cashier of the Bank of New South Wales and lived above the bank with his family for many years. This was on the land he inherited in George Street. Ellard's music shop was nearby at 486 George Street. John Henry Black died in 1867 at his residence at 167 Macquarie Street, Sydney.

Louisa Black née Skinner (1808-1874) was the daughter of Mary, née Watkins, a convict on board the 'Nile' 1801, and Samuel Skinner, a potter, who, as Mary’s husband, came free on the 'Nile'. Louisa Skinner was born after her father's death, and her mother died two years later, after a fall from her horse.

Melanie de Mestre (1829-1925) was the daughter of Mary Ann Black (1801-1861) and Prosper de Mestre, and was about the same age as her first cousin, Mary Anne Black.
