    Michael Atherton (1960-) was born in the United Kingdom and migrated to Sydney, New South Wales, 1965. He is a guitarist, composer, multi-instrumentalist and performer. He completed a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) and Master in Arts (Honors) at the University of New South Wales, further study of music at University of Sydney and University of New England majoring in ethnomusicology, and a PhD from University of Technology, Sydney, 2017. He was the foundation Professor of Music at University of Western Sydney, 1993-2013 and pioneered in the area of music therapy in adolescence.
