    Frederic Rudolph Barlee is the nephew of Sir Frederick Palgrave Barlee, Colonial Secretary of Western Australia, 1855-1875. Frederic Barlee studied a Master of Arts degree at Sydney University. He was admitted to the Bar of New South Wales, 1887 and then to the Bar of Western Australia, 1897. Barlee was appointed Supreme Court Librarian in 1905 until his death in 1941.

  • Scope and Content
    286 page handwritten journal in ink documenting the monthly meetings of the Apophthegm Society, Sydney, 15 August 1893-1 August 1894. The journal is divided into three volumes and includes hand drawn illustrations in ink throughout. It begins with an introduction to the conception of the society: to record and invent good sayings, followed by the society's rules, and the focus subjects and resultant sayings documented each month.

    Typescript note attached to the frontispiece: "This book was found in a Red Cross waste products shop during the second World War. Inside the cover it bore the following inscription: - "Fred. R. Barlee, Wentworth Court, Sydney, N.S.W., July 1893".
