  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    James McAuley was born on 12 October 1917 in Lakemba, Sydney. He studied English, Latin and Philosophy at the University of Sydney and taught for two years before joining the military service as a research consultant. In 1944 McAuley and Harold Stewart were involved in the Ern Malley hoax. McAuley was also a lecturer at the Australian School of Pacific Administration, the founding editor of Quadrant and Reader and then Professor in Poetry at the University of Tasmania. He died in Tasmania on 15 October 1976 after a long battle with cancer.
