  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

George Allen (1800-1877), solicitor and politician, was born in London and emigrated to Australia in 1816 with his mother and siblings, following the conviction and transportation of his step-father Thomas Collicott for tax evasion. In 1817 he became the first solicitor to be trained in the colony, and in 1822 founded his own legal firm. In 1847 he took his son George Wigram Allen into partnership to form Allen & Son. He was a founding director of the Australian Gaslight Company, director and later president of the Bank of New South Wales, and director of several other companies. He was Mayor of Sydney, 1844-1845, and a member of the Legislative Council. In 1823 he married Jane Bowden, daughter of Thomas Bowden. He owned several properties including Toxteth Estate, Glebe, where he lived with his family until his death in 1877.
