Ethel Turner (1870-1958) came to Australia with her mother and three sisters in 1881. Ethel was educated along with her sister Lillian at Sydney Girls' High School where they ran their own magazine, The Iris. When Ethel left school the sisters founded and co-edited a sixpenny monthly, The Parthenon, which lasted for three years until its printers, Gordon & Gotch, were sued for libel. In 1896, Ethel married Herbert Raine Curlewis and they had a daughter Jean Curlewis (1898–1930) and a son, Adrian Curlewis (1901-1985). Ethel Turner is one of Australia’s best-known children’s writers. Her first novel, Seven Little Australians (1894) is widely regarded as a classic and its publication marked a turning point in Australian children’s literature. Ethel Turner wrote over 40 books and many of her earlier stories first appeared in The Bulletin. She was the editor of the children’s page in the Town and Country Journal for 27 years and Chief ‘Sunbeamer’ for the children’s page of the Sunday Sun newspaper from 1921-1931.
