Sylvia Singh was born in Lismore, New South Wales in 1940. Her grandfather, Beer Singh immigrated to Australia from India in the 1890s. Her family was one of the few Indian families to migrate to Australia with female relatives.

Many Indian men came to Australia as young men, never married, and returned to India to die. Singh intended to write a book to remember these early pioneers of Indian migration. She did not complete the book, however, this collection is the research she gathered over 30 years.
