  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The convict transport Hillsborough left from Gravesend in December 1798 under the command of William Hingston and arrived in Sydney on the 26th July 1799.
It was notoriously bad journey with the convicts being purportedly starved, shackled heavily during the day and double ironed below decks at night. Typhus broke out and 95 of the 300 convicts on board died, which was the worst death rate recorded on a convict transport to Sydney.
Notable convicts on board include William Noah, who wrote a journal of the voyage and George Crossley, who established a successful legal practice in Sydney.
