    Harold Hugh Whitehead Martin was born in Nambucca Heads, New South Wales in 1899. Harold married Alma Amelia Ringham in 1933. On 2 September 1940, Harold enlisted in the Australian Army's E. C. Hygiene and promoted to sergeant a week later. In 1941, Harold was transferred to the 14th Field Hygiene Section in the Northern Territory. In 1943, Harold transferred to Headquarters of AIF (Hygiene), Sydney and in September 1945, travelled to Singapore to work with the 6 Australian P.O.W. Reception Camp.
    After the War, Harold and Alma settled in Orange, NSW. Harold passed away in 1983.

    Bequeathed to the donor by Alma Martin, widow of Harold Martin, and donor's mother-in-law.
  • Scope and Content
    Collection of letters, photographs and negatives documenting Harold Martin's service in the Australian Army's 14 Field Hygiene Section during World War II. The letters are chiefly written from Harold to his wife, Alma in Sydney, from the Northern Territory and document the daily life, observations and experiences of an essential support worker in a military medical unit. Harold also describes the journey north to the Northern Territory and his time in Singapore towards the end of the War.

    Photograph album 'Souvenir Snaps from Northern Territory' containing 197 black and white photographs of the trip from Adelaide to the Northern Territory and Singapore.
    Includes photographs of Harold Martin and other members of the14th Field Hygiene Section, Adelaide River and the landscape heading north, the Japanese supreme command marching to sign the Japanese surrender, September 1945 and Lord Louis Mountbatten, Singapore.

    Also includes photographs of Aboriginal Australians participating in public corroborees at Darwin Botanic Gardens and Melville Island.
