Charles Herbert Currey (1890-1970), educationist and legal historian, was born in 1890 at Ulmarra, New South Wales. He completed a Bachelor of Arts at Sydney University in 1912 and an MA in 1914. Currey married Linda Wise on 10 January 1916. Although admitted to the Bar in 1922, he did not practise law but continued his work and research in the teaching of history and civics. He was President of the Teachers’ Federation, fellow and President of the Royal Australian Historical Society and a part-time lecturer at Sydney University Law School in English and Australian legal and constitutional history. Currey died on 2 March 1970. He willed half his residuary estate to the Public [State] Library of New South Wales, which endowed the Library's annual CH Currey memorial fellowship ‘for the writing of Australian history from original sources, making use of the resources of the State Library of New South Wales’.
