Hayes Gordon (1920-1999) was born in Boston, USA and moved to New York City to become an actor. In 1952, after being blacklisted as a communist sympathiser, he moved to Australia and performed in lead roles in Kismet and Kiss Me Kate. In 1958, he founded the Ensemble Theatre and the Ensemble Studios acting school, which became famous for introducing method acting into Australia. His most notable role was as Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof which he performed from 1967-1970 and again in 1985-1986. In 1979, he was awarded an Order of the British Empire and in 1997, he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia. He died in Sydney on 19 October 1999.
