  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Thomas Henry Distin Morgan was born in England in 1868 but grew up in Sydney. In 1895 he was ordained priest by the Archbishop of Sydney and served as curate at St John’s Darlinghurst and at Camden. In the same year he received a licence as the first Chaplain Superintendent of the Mission to Seamen, 100 George Street, Sydney. It was a position he held until 1908 during which time he also started a Mission to Seamen in Newcastle and Adelaide. In 1900 he was appointed Acting Chaplain Royal Naval Establishments, Garden Island. In 1908 he resigned both positions owing to a nervous breakdown. After recovering he was inducted Rector of St. Simon and St. Jude, Bowral, NSW in 1910 and remained there until his death in 1937.

    Collection was collated by Rev. T.H.D. Morgan’s daughter Barbara Distin Morgan and passed onto her daughter, who was the donor’s mother.

    Barbara Distin Morgan papers relating to Reverend Thomas Henry Distin Morgan and the Morgan family, 1894-1993. Including letters, photographs, commissions, ​illuminated address, newspaper clippings, and printed material. The collection was accumulated by Rev. Distin Morgan’s daughter, Barbara Distin Morgan and documents his life. The material falls into two parts, Rev. T.H. Distin Morgan’s own papers and material gathered by Barbara to further illuminate his life and the wider Distin Morgan family.
