  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

During the 1890s, Arthur Streeton (1867-1943) travelled to inland areas of New South Wales to paint, visiting Mittagong in the latter part of 1892. In November 1892, Streeton wrote a series of letters to Tom Roberts, G. W. Marshall-Hall and Theodore Fink from the Commercial Hotel, Mittagong, his letters including descriptions of the hotel and its owner.

The Commercial Hotel, Mittagong, was built by Frederick Draper in 1875. The third storey of the hotel was demolished in the 1920s during renovations. Fred Draper, whom Streeton probably presented this watercolour to, died in 1893, aged 56 years.
