    Neil McEwan trained as a chorister and organist at St Mary's Anglican Cathedral in Auckland, New Zealand. He studied music at the Royal Schools of Music, Trinity College of Music, London, The University of Durham, University of New South Wales and University of Sydney and achieved a PhD in Gregorian chant semiological research.

    McEwan was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his services to music research and choral conducting, 2009; appointed a Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music for services to church music, 2009; and awarded Honorary Fellow of the Guild of Church Music, 2017.

    McEwan lectured paleography and conducting at The Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney and directed the Conservatorium choirs. He was Director of Music Emeritus at Christ Church St Laurence, Sydney, 2018. He is the Director of Studies for the Guild of Church Music in Australia and New Zealand, and presenter and programmer for Fine Music Sydney.
