  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Frank Hinder, artist and art teacher was instrumental in introducing modernism to Australia. He was born at Summer Hill in 1906 and studied art under Dattilo Rubbo at the Royal Art Society of New South Wales. In 1927 he left for the United States for further study at the Art Institute of Chicago School. In 1929 he met a talented young sculptor named Margel Harris and a year later they were secretly married as her mother was opposed to the match. For the next nine months Frank lived in Montreal while waiting to receive his resident’s visa as the husband of an American citizen. The Hinders left America with their young daughter Enid in 1934 and settled in Sydney where they remained for the rest of their lives. During the 1950s they became increasingly recognised, Frank for his abstract paintings and Margel for her large public sculptures.
During the 1970s and 80s, while watching television, Frank would sketch portraits of personalities appearing on the screen who interested him. Among them are journalist George Negus, Rev. Fred Nile, Barry Jones, Rabbi Brasch, Ted Mack, and Sir Philip Baxter. For each portrait Hinder has added a succinct comment explaining why the person was being televised. In several cases these comments are accompanied by an amusing pencil vignette.
