  • Scope and Content
DJ Gemma details her contributions to Sydney’s LGBTQI+ cultural life and gay, lesbian, and feminist activism since the 1980s. She talks about her
creative work as a DJ, sound and lighting technician and event producer for many much loved LGBTQI+ dance parties and events, including Club Kooky, Club Arak and Pluto Beat.

Gemma discusses her family migrating to Australia from Lebanon in the mid-1970s; her move as a young adult to inner-city Darlinghurst and discovering Sydney’s LGBTQI+ scene; her early immersion in the women’s movement and lesbian communities, and her involvement in queer party culture and events as a DJ and event producer. She also reflects on contemporary shifts in identity politics, changes in the way people socialise, and how Sydney’s night-time economy operates.
