  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Architect Hedley Norman Carr was born in Orange, NSW, in 1904. He attended Orange High School and Newington College, Stanmore. Completing his architectural studies at Sydney Technical College in 1927, he served his architectural articles with Arthur Anderson at his office at 7 Bridge Street, Sydney. After registering as an architect in 1929, Carr set off on an overseas working holiday, completing work with Swartz and Ryland, Monterey, California, USA; Kenneth M. Murchison, Washington DC; Robert Atkinson & A.F. Anderson, London, UK; W.H. Byrne & Son, Dublin and the Housing Architects Department, Dublin, Ireland. On his return to Sydney in 1936, Carr set up as a sole practitioner at 26 O’Connell Street, Sydney. From 1942-44 he was a temporary architect for the Allied Works Council, providing architectural services to the war effort, whilst conducting limited private practice concurrently. Hedley Carr continued in solo private practice until he was joined in partnership by Clarence Albert Allen in 1951, practising as Hedley Carr & Allen. In 1958, John McEachran Michell Watts joined the partnership, with the practice becoming Hedley Carr, Allen & Watts.
The practice worked across domestic and commercial projects, in Sydney and in regional areas of New South Wales.
Carr died in 1966, aged 62. The firm continued without him until Allen’s death in 1983 and Watts’ retirement in the 1990s.
