  • Scope and Content
In this interview undertaken as part of the Library’s Pride 2023 collecting priority, journalist and storyteller, Patrick Abboud, reflects on his life and career so far and learning to reconcile his sexuality with his love of family and cultural background.
Patrick begins by speaking about his family’s migration to Australia when his Lebanese mother and Palestinian father eloped and settled in western Sydney. He recalls his awareness of same-sex attraction as a young man, being bullied from age six at school for his colour and his presumed sexuality and his struggle coming-out as gay.
Patrick then talks about studying communications at the University of Western Sydney before moving to live in Beirut where he discovered the city’s vibrant queer subculture and activist underground. He recalls returning to Sydney but leaving for Europe after experiencing a sense of isolation from the city’s Oxford Street queer scene.
Patrick also speaks about his work on the Triple J news-radio show Hack, winning a Walkley Award for Excellence in Journalism and how his increased recognition and popularity as a high-profile gay man, has given him the opportunity to be a storyteller for his community and an ambassador and advocate for the queer youth-focussed organisations Twenty-Ten and Wear it Purple.
From a more personal perspective, Patrick also discusses his relationship of the last eight years, his close friendship with the two women with whom he recently had a child and reflects on his parents’ unconditional love and acceptance.
