    Jasper Laybutt was born in Newcastle, NSW in 1961. Jasper came out as lesbian in their late teenage years and then later as transgender. Jasper’s coming out as a transman happened whilst they were in the midst of being co-creator and editor of Wicked Women magazine and Wicked Women events in Sydney in the 1990’s. 
  • Scope and Content
    In this interview Jasper reflects on his early years growing up in working-class Newcastle in a haunted home. He then talks about feeling isolated as a young person and having always felt different. Jasper recalls meeting people that led him to discover the gay bars of Newcastle. He discusses meeting a very important political community member who gave him an “in to the Sydney scene”.

    Jasper reflects on finishing school and going to Teachers College where he studied art. He discusses finding his first girlfriend which opened the way for his move to Sydney where he discovers the lesbian bar Ruby Reds.

    Jasper talks about the inception and early days of Wicked Women magazine, and the people involved in making Wicked Women. Jasper tells stories about Wicked Women events and parties, including the winner of the first Wicked Women competition.

    Jasper discusses FTM America and its influence on him personally.  He talks about setting up of Boys will be Boys, the first support group for trans men in Sydney.  He discusses The Gender Centre and his role as the editor of Polare, the newsletter published by The Gender Centre.  Jasper also reflects on the group G.O.D, including those who were in it. 

    Jasper describes feeling an impetus to leave Sydney and to return home to Newcastle.  He talks about the things he has been up to in the years since leaving Sydney and the various ways he keeps creative back home.
