    Ben (Benedetto) Haneman (1923-2001) was born in Florence, Italy into a Jewish family and migrated to Australia aged four. After graduating in Medicine from the University of Sydney Dr Haneman passed the Royal Australasian College of Physicians to become a Gastroenterologist at St. George Hospital, Kogarah, New South Wales where he also filled the role of warden in clinical studies.
    Dr Haneman had many interests including the history of medicine and was a regular contributor to periodicals such as the Australian Doctor, the Jewish News and the Australian Book Collector. A particular interest of Dr Haneman’s was Spanish literature, history and culture and in 1997 he donated his significant collection of ‘Don Quixote’ editions to the State Library of New South Wales.
