  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Charles Rodius (sometimes spelled Rhodius) was born in 1802 in Cologne, Germany, though was likely of French descent. He moved to England and, in 1829, was convicted of theft and sentenced to transportation for seven years, arriving in New South Wales in December 1829. He was assigned to the Department of Public Works where he worked as an unpaid drawing instructor and draughtsman of Colony buildings. In July 1841 he was granted a certificate of freedom. His portraits had been published from 1831 and were exhibited for the Society for the Promotion of the Fine Arts in Australia in 1847, 1849 and 1857, allowing him to make a fair living as an artist and art teacher. He died from complications of a stroke on 9 April 1860 in Liverpool, Sydney.
