  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Anne Zahalka was born in Sydney in 1957. She studied at East Sydney Technical College, Sydney College of the Arts and the University of New South Wales and has held over 40 solo exhibitions of her work in Australia and overseas. A renowned photo-media artist, her work explores themes including Australian cultural and gender stereotypes, leisure and the environment.

  • Collection history
    Photographs of Barbara Armitage, The Necks, Hoodoo Gurus and Ken Done exhibited as Portraits by Anne Zahalka, 1989-1995 in The Work of Art, Australian Women Artists and Writers exhibition at the State Library of New South Wales, 12 December 1995 to 7 January 1996. Photographs of Ann Lewis and Geoffrey Legge and Frank Waters exhibited in The Innovators: Collectors who shaped Sydney's Avante-Garde 1963-1978 at the S.H. Ervin Gallery, 26 June to 1 August 1999.

    Five chromogenic prints and one cibachrome print of Australian musicians, artists, gallery owners and a mayor photographed by Anne Zahalka between 1988 and 1999:

    1. Barbara Armitage, Mayor of Waverley 1988 -1997, posing in the Waverley Council Chambers.

    2. The Necks, Australian avante-garde jazz trio, 1988, photographed as a commission for their 1989 album Sex. Annotated on recto "The Necks, Tony Buck, Lloyd Swanton and Chris Abrahams ; 1 F.11 m y 30 75".

    3. Hoodoo Gurus, Australian rock band of Dave Faulkner, Brad Shepherd, Richard Grossman and Mark Kingsmill, photographed as a commission for their 1991 album Kinky.

    4. Ken Done, artist, photographed as a commission for the cover of Art Monthly magazine, 1995.

    5. Ann Lewis, owner of Gallery A on Gipps Street, Paddington, photographed at home, 1999.

    6. Geoffrey Legge and Frank Watters, owners of Watters Gallery in Darlinghurst and East Sydney, photographed at home, 1999.
