Edward Alexander Richards, known professionally as Ted Richards, was born in 1937 in Melbourne, Victoria. His career in photography began in the 1950s working as an apprentice, and in March 1958, during a backpacking trip to London, he captured a rare image of the rally in Trafalgar Square, prior to the Aldermaston March, protesting the nuclear bomb. From 1964 to 1967 he worked in the photography department at the John Curtin School of Medical Research, during the 1970s and 1980s, he was self-employed as a commercial photographer in Manuka in the Canberra suburb of Griffith, and from 2002 to 2007 he worked at the Australian War Memorial.
