The Ethnic Affairs Commission of New South Wales was formed in 1976 and established as a permanent government authority by the Ethnic Affair Commission Act, 1979. The Commission’s chief function is to investigate ethnic affairs and promote the social, political, economic and educational integration of New South Wales’ wide variety of ethnic groups while recognising different cultural identities.
William (Bill) Jegorow was appointed temporary part time Deputy Chairperson of the Commission by Premier Neville Wran in 1977 and was made full time Deputy Chairperson from 1980-1986. During Jegorow’s tenure, the Commission worked closely with local councils, ethnic committees and government departments throughout Australia and addressed issues such as the recognition of overseas qualifications, the Migration Act, ethnic broadcasting and the beginnings of SBS, refugees, equal opportunities for all and policy development.
In 2001 the Commission was renamed Community Relations Commission for a Multicultural New South Wales and in 2014 it was renamed Multicultural NSW.
