  • Scope and Content
In this interview, Alex Greenwich discusses growing up in an apartment in Sydney’s Circular Quay area, his schooling at Sydney Grammar School and then university, studying Russian and Business at UNSW while working in his family’s business. Greenwich reflects on coming out as gay to his elder brother, who is also gay, and in his early 20’s, his involvement in Australian Marriage Equality, which led to becoming that organisation’s National Convenor in his late 20s.

He discusses organising and campaigning strategies, lobbying and working with the LGBTQ+ community and allies including local, state and federal politicians and reflects on the Australian Marriage Equality Postal Survey outcome which legalised same-sex marriage in 2017.

He discusses his involvement with Independent MP Clover Moore’s team on Sydney City Council which led to his standing for the NSW Legislative Assembly seat of Sydney, being elected in 2012 where he replaced Moore. He discusses the plethora of issues that he works on as a state member. These have included residential planning and development issues, the night-time economy and lock-out laws, cycleways and open space, homelessness, and his commitment to addressing institutional bias and discrimination against LGBTQ+ communities which he believes is embedded in faith-operated schools and aged and disability care facilities. This has led to the Equity Legislation Amendment: LGBTQIA+ Bill and the Conversion Practices Prohibition Bill he drafted and introduced to NSW Parliament in 2023.
