  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

George Alphonse de Tourcey Collingridge was born on 29 October 1847 at Goddington Manor, near Bicester, Oxfordshire, England. His family moved to Paris in 1853 where he was educated and studied architecture in Paris. In 1879, he migrated to Australia and worked for the Illustrated Sydney News, the Australian Town and Country Journal and the Sydney Mail. With his brother Arthur, he founded the (Royal) Art Society of New South Wales in July 1880. He became particularly interested in European maritime exploration of Australia and was an ardent proponent of the theory that the Portuguese had charted most of the Australian coastline by 1530, publishing two books and over two dozen articles on the subject. He died on 1 June 1931 at the Coast Hospital (Prince Henry Hospital) in Randwick, Sydney.
