  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Hall and Company was a photography studio based in Sydney between the late 1800s and the 1950s. William Frederick Hall established a studio in Phillip Street, Sydney, in 1890 and his son, William James Hall took over the business from 1902. The company was known for its photographing of agricultural shows and livestock, as well as sailing and watercraft. William Frederick Hall died on 28 August 1943 in Chatswood and William James Hall died on 26 August 1951 in Darlinghurst.

  • Scope and Content
    1 album containing x photographic prints of Logie house in Glenbrook, New South Wales, taken by Hall & Co. photographers. The house was built in the 1880s by Captain Charles Smith and later purchased in 1921 by architect Herwald Gordon Kirkpatrick (1891-1951) and his brother-in-law, G.H.D. (Jack) Morris. They converted the property into the Lapstone Hill hotel, which opened in 1930.

    The photographs, taken between 1921 and 1929, pre-date the hotel conversion and show the grounds and interiors of Logie house. Several images also show H.G. Kirkpatrick, his wife, Oriel Josephine (nee Wilson) and their daughters, Lolita and Naomi. Includes 4 bifold panorama prints.

    Album is embossed "Logie" on the centre front cover in gold. Inscribed "Estelle Macken (asst. mgrs), Lapstone, Glenbrook" on inside fly leaf and "Photos by Hall & Co., 20 Hunter St. Sydney" on inside back cover. Prints xx signed "Hall" in lower right corners.
