  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Joseph Firth was born on 7 January 1828 in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England, one of at least ten children. In October 1847, he married Mary Owen (1824-1903), with whom he had at least six children: John (1850-); William (1852-1918); Joseph (1854-); Elizabeth (1858-1948); Edward (1863-); Dyson (1886-1940). At some point after 1871, he and Mary emigrated to Melbourne, Victoria where he died on 8 April 1890.

    Signatures include: Joseph Firth (1793-1856) (father); Monimia Dyson (1801-1873) (mother); Thomas (1821-1887) (brother); Scipio (1822-1847) (brother); John (1824-1886); Elizabeth Ann (1829-1831) (sister); Sarah Elizabeth (1831-1925) (sister); Hemingway (1834-1910) (brother); Monimia (1835-1924) (sister)

    Includes address to "Joe Firth" for his coming of age (21 years old), dated 7 January 1849

    Includes letter from Lord Chamberlain at St James’ Palace, London, 25 August 1857 to J. Outraum (?) and J. Firth.

    Includes loose printed ephemera including flyer about the establishment of the Launceston Industrial School for Girls (founded 1877) on which “Mrs J. Firth” appeared on the women’s committee and “J. Firth” was an office-bearer.
